almatthews7 I've literally just gone down a Dow Jones & The Industrials wormhole and was led here. Of all the "proto-techno" from this period, Haas/Bartel, Tolerance, Cab Voltaire, Ike Yard etc this is the most staggering I've come across. Thank you for sharing this. Fascinating stuff! Favorite track: the leisure class (continuous mix).

about

In 1982, right as Tone Set was taking off, I made 23 pieces of music all the same tempo, to be able to easily edit from one to the other in old school ways. The music was created on a Pro-One synth and The Cat™ (by Octave). All percussion noises were made by synths; no drum machines were used. Recorded on a Teac 2340-S in the final months of residence at my parent’s house, my goal was to be as monodic and repetitive as possible, any variety coming about from the editing. The pieces were finished, but I never got around to the edit as life got busy. It would have been one of the first instances of a packaged for sale continuous mix, had I done so. And all from my own compositions. Techno mixes are usually samplers of lots of different artists. The Fabric Live and MixMag CD series are current examples.
So now, editing on computer, but only doing things I could have done back then, it has taken me 3 months to finally put this together. The music edit was only a few days, but it turns out, each piece was separated by a sound clip. These clips were from the same tapes Tone Set used for Cal’s Ranch. So I began adding them to the mix ala Tone Set, and that took up the rest of the time. Here's the full mix, the instrumental mix and the individual tracks that have lain unused all these years on The White Box tape 90-3.
However, “she saw me” appeared in this form at our live show at Merlin’s from 1982, available here on bandcamp. It was later turned into a poppier song, included on the “Such Heavy Conviction” box set by Vinyl-On-Demand.
This is posted here and at the galen from tone set page.
I've waited years to finally put this together. Super monodic techno. Some poppy Tone Set-ishnes creeps in. Includes continuous techno mix.
